Located on either side of the backbone, one on each side, kidneys are in the shape of beans and in the size of a fist, weighing 150 grams in men and 135 grams in women. They are of 10- 12 cms long, 5- 7 cms broad with 3 cms thickness each. These kidneys stuffed with millions of filtering units called Nephrons, are covered with ‘capsule’ and the Nephrons are encircled by a network of blood vessels. Produced in the Nephrons, urine passes through a tube- called Ureter – which connects kidneys to urinary bladder. The blood reaching the kidneys to Renal Artery gets filtered by Nephrons and the waste products are discharged through urine. The pure blood filtered there reaches the heart through Inferior Venacava and the waste products reaching through the urinary bladder and from there, they are secreted out through urethra.
